Hey all,

Just a quick one - I'm sure you've all noticed how much Spam we get on the forums. I'm doing my best to reduce this amount - every time someone spams I ban their username, email and IP address - but it's an ongoing job. The other option would be to require a moderator to approve a membership before someone can post but I want to avoid that as it means that players can't join and start taking part straight away.

However, while working on this problem... I do have one request of the rest of you. If you see a spam message on the forums, please do not respond to it. There is a process I go through to ban the spammer and remove the post, and that process is harder once someone has replied to the post.

Thanks for your assistance,

James

Oops. Sorry. I'll go flagelate myself then, shall I?

I've noticed that we now have a 'report post' button. Is this the intended purpose of that button?

I cannot see this button.

Spamming is getting bad now. Is it possible to get rid of auto registration, and maybe get some more admins/mods to approve members? Most people that are playing would have registered by now anyways.

Another solution is using Textual Confirmation. This stops many many robots, and was heaps of help on emperorschildren.net. It can ask questions that robots have a hard time with. It has a base list, but you can put new q's in to make it work better. ie "What language is this forum in?" vs "What is earth called in the year 40000?" "Who is the dark angels primarch?" etc, which robots and spiders have a hard time with. http://bbantispam.com/tc/ or http://bbantispam.com/atc/

You could also make users have to have 5 posts to post links, or filter out common russian, spanish, etc words.

I've now figured out how to adjust the user registration settings so that the user must reply to a confirmation email in order to be registered. That should hopefully curb a lot of the Spambots.

The Emporer is displeased with spam.

I do believe the Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer instructs me to shoot those committing the act of spamming. I am sure there is a special clause regarding additional punishments if the spamming is porn....

Yes, but the Uplifting Primer instructs you to shoot pretty much everything that you don't have to salute. For such is the simple life of the Infantryman.

Can it be set that all accounts need to be authorised before they can post?

All of that chocolate fudge syrup on people was making me hungry.
